Chris and Megan at Font Romeu

Chris and Megan managed to get in some high altitude training on holiday in France recently!

Font Romeu is set in the Pyrenees over 2000m above sea level. It receives the highest amount of sunlight in the whole of France and is the favoured training camp of Paula Radcliffe. There are some great running trails and beautiful scenery...we tried not to think of the bears roaming the landscape....

For those interested in training in the Pyrenees see this...

Forez Athletics Club 10k report
Five members of Loftus AC recently took part in the club’s annual visit to Forez Athletics Club (FAC) in France. Each year The FAC organises a 10K race called “l’Eurofoulee”. They invite athletes from Italy, Portugal, Germany, Soham (in Cambridgeshire) and of course Loftus! Runners from all over France also compete for the good prize money.

This year competing for Loftus AC were Steve Owen, Mark Peggs, Angharad Owen, Alec Duffield (me) and Sian Owen was the team photographer! We travelled from Stanstead Airport early Friday morning, arriving at St Etienne Airport 10 AM French time. Here we were greeted by the host families who would be looking after us all weekend. I was staying with the Mondon family who were incredibly hospitable. Although I did have a suspicion they were trying to over-feed me so I wouldn’t beat them in the race!

As the race was not until Sunday we spent two days doing activities with our host families, however we all met up again on Saturday night for a dinner-dance with the mayor of Andreziuex-Boutheon which is the town where the FAC are based. All of the visiting countries attend and so do the host families and key members of The FAC. After listening to the mayor’s speech in 5 different languages we were about ready for bed!

For the Friday and the Saturday the weather had been beautiful, with temperatures reaching 30 degrees! But when we arose on Sunday morning it seemed we had brought the British weather with us! The race kicked off at 9.30 and the rain had held off until then, but shortly after we started the heavens opened. Perfect weather for racing!

All of us thoroughly enjoyed the race and ran well. Angharad ran the 5K this year as she was shaking off a knee injury however she still ran 19.03 and finished second woman. Mark Peggs was running with a heavy cold but still managed to complete the 10K in a creditable time of 43.55 Steve Owen ran a good time of 47.04 and was quoted afterwards saying “I really enjoyed that, I’ll be doing more of them this year”. I was also very pleased with my run after running a PB of 33.19 and finishing as 1st junior. The day was rounded off with a game of Laser Guns, from which Steve (AKA James Bond) showed off his gun skills finishing third in the whole competition!

The weekend had been a huge success and everyone had a wonderful time, but then came Monday and the snow! Getting home became an experience courtesy of Ryan Air, who decided to cancel the flight. Despite some of us being quite happy to stay for an extra week, we boarded an alternative flight from Lyon!

We would all like to thank Tony and Brenda for organising the trip again even though they could not attend as it was their son’s wedding. I would also like to thank Steve and Sian for coming along and supervising us. But most of all I would like to thank the Forez Athletics Club for their brilliant hospitality.
