Marathon Running

Marathon Running; Barcelona; Brotherhood of Man; and other stuff.

As some of you know I recently went on a little holiday adventure with the Clubs Marathon running Dynamic Duo Don & Jo Abbott. Now naturally this wasn’t just a holiday (I don’t think they ever go on “just a holiday”), the destination was Barcelona and of course it involved running a Marathon. Now I’m not going to bore you with a day by day account of what we got up to, we had a lovely time thank you, the flights were good, our apartment very nice, the weather was lovely, we survived a week without getting mugged or robbed and managed to avoid getting caught up in a riot (just)!
And as for the Marathon.
Joanne ran a very credible 3:43:50, nowhere near her PB but a good time and her best marathon in 2 years.
Donald was going well and on for a time of just over 4 hours but unfortunately had to drop out, he was carrying an injury and with a busy year coming I think he did the right thing. Thus after the event we were all very sympathetic and didn’t mention once the fact that he only ran 15k.
My mate Andy Fletcher from Cumbria, who some of you know, ran a PB of 3:43:12 and was a very happy man.
Linda Cromwell of Whitby, who some of you know, also ran a PB of 4:20:44 and was just as excited a week after the event as she was at the start.
And me, I also ran a PB of 3:17:23, was very tired at the end and never want to run a Marathon again. 26 miles is a stupid distance to try and run, whoever thought it up should have been shot, and as for those amongst us who regularly run them, well they need certifying.
Which brings me back to Don and Jo.
Having just ran Barcelona they are dusting themselves off and in 2 weeks time will be running London, in May they have a month off, but in June they’re at it again in Lancaster, and all this is just a warm up for the Lakeland 100 in July!! I just don’t know how they do it, I take my hat off to them and was trying to think of a suitable tribute to them and their globetrotting escapades.
Then it came to me, thank goodness for “Brotherhood of Man” (that’s the first time I’ve ever thought that, honest), and thank goodness for the “Barron Knights” (I’ve thought that many times) Don & Jo running around together, running around forever………..

Long ago,
Down in the Town outside M & Co,
Met a young couple named Don’n’Jo,
They fell in love at first sight you know,

Hot was she,
Wearing a skirt well above the knee,
Even with just one eye Don could see,
He knew that it just had to be,

Running around Forever,
Running the Welly together,
Don’n’Jo
Strolling on down the harbour,
He doing his best to charm her,
Don’n’Jo
They knew it wasn't wrong
They found a love so strong

They hit it off alright
Down on the beach all night
They found them on the sand
They saw them lying there, hand-in-hand

Not so long ago,
High on flu tablets in Barceló ,
A not so young couple named Don’n’Jo
Put on their trainers and said lets go,

Fit was she,
Hoping to get close to three thirty,
Don knew that he had an injury,
But off they ran hoping for a P B,

Running around Forever,
Running the World together,
Don’n’Jo
She set off so much faster,
He knew he couldn’t catch her,
Don’n’Jo
Jo ran as ever strong
For Don it all went wrong
On the Voll Damm that night
They couldn’t stay upright
They found them on the sand
They saw them lying there, couldn’t stand

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you’re too young and have never heard of “Brotherhood of Man” that’s perfectly understandable so just check out “Angelo” on You Tube.
If you’ve never heard of “The Barron Knights” that’s unforgivable, just listen to “Live in Trouble”.
And by the way no there’s no truth in the rumour that I was once a member of The Barron Knights, I have to admit to taking a lot of inspiration from them though.

Hi All,
Hope you're all well. Would like to let you all know about one of my club's yearly events in and around a local country park. For those observant of you you will notice a certain Mr Hepples holds the current lap record (and i believe the club holds the overalll record too!). Leg length is approx 3.75 miles. 'Very Scenic and undulating' :)

Date of the event is 10th March and UK Results link is - http://www.ukresults.net/12mar.html#haigh

Would be great to see a Loftus team turn out (offer of a place for the night is always available too!).

Spread the word if you could. Would be really appreciated.

Back in the Summer on a dark night somewhere high on the Moors, Catherine said to me in the back of Rob’s car, “Don’t do that Mike! and by the way when are you going to start writing on the Forum again, I used to quite look forward to reading your little write ups”.
Well to be honest I just don’t seem to have had the time this year, the months have just slipped by. It’s been another busy year here in B&B land, and what with the afternoon re-runs of “Only Fools and Horses” then the Athletics in Daegu, and to top it all the storyline in “Doctors” has been unmissable.
Anyway finally I’ve found five minutes so thought it was time to make a contribution and try and bring the forum back to life.
So here goes;
(For Catherine)

Cross CountryFile

With 2 NYSD Cross Country meetings already been and gone, there’s a bit of catching up to do, there’s already been some notable performances, notable debuts and notable absentees (yes Chris your not going to get off that lightly).
Starting with the youngsters I have to admit to not knowing most of them but always cheer them on from the side, and it should come as no surprise to see the names Kent and Marstri…….Mastral…….Mastrawl……(Julie’s Kids) featuring prominently, I’m sure if they stick at it they’ll soon be faster than their ‘not getting any younger Mums’. Saying that I’ve got to hand it to Nicola though, she seems to be getting faster as she gets older, having started the Cross Country season as she ran the Summer Fells, still running fast, still mentally strong, and still straightening her hair so as not be mistaken for Rebekah Brooks. Julia has also started really well, I won’t say anything derogatory about Julia, she’s too nice a person for that, Oh except for the moment at Olivers Mount where to encourage me from the side she shouted “Come on Mick, this is easier than a Fell Race” just as well I was too out of breath to answer.
So all’s well with the ladies, 2 wins under their belt, top of the shop already and we hope on the way to yet another series victory.
Bit more mixed for the men though.
We were a bit under strength at Acklam, I’ll get to Chris Ellis later, but first we should focus on the positives. Firstly I seemed to have acquired a new name “Nick Clark” don’t know how that happened but I’m okay with it, he seems to be doing better than Mick Clarke ever did. Secondly the club seems to have acquired another good runner, cross country debutant Mark Young has made a good start and he’ll only get better, he’s a young man, he’s a new recruit, and I’m sure he finds it fun to run in the NYSD, (there’s a song in there somewhere I think, maybe for another time).
So a disappointing result at Acklam, however Scarborough was a different story. We had a very strong team out at Oliver’s Mount, and Chris Ellis did make it but we’ll get to him in a minute. The team in fact was so strong that as we gathered at the start a good number of us “non counters” decided to play the “finish in the same position as your number game” just to give us something to aim for. On the day this game was won by Alan Bottomley, he paced it brilliantly and got it bang on, number 70 finished 70th, well done Alan, although he was run very close by Paul Smith, number 66 finished 67th. This could make for a good competition for which we could have a trophy at the end of the season (Dave), lowest accumulative difference between race number and position, best four races to count. With all our male race numbers between 50 and 70 this seems to be biased towards us “not so good runners” which is fine by me.
So with us lot meandering around trying to count runners and trying not to get lapped it was easy to forget that at the sharp end there was a race going on, in which our team did rather well, with 6 runners in the top 18, and John Hunter, James Wilson and Paul Butler finishing 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. Good to see Paul Butler still managing to run well even with a poorly knee. In fact it’s been a really up and down year for Paul, he had the highs of the Summer Fell series, winning almost all of them, then the low of picking up a mystery knee injury, then the joy when Steps announced they were reforming, only to be shortly followed by the devastating news that West Life were calling it a day. Life can be tough sometimes Paul, although I’m sure you’re spirits are lifted each weekend when you see how well Harry from McFly is doing on Strictly.

And so finally to our notable absentee at Acklam. Chris Ellis, the once mild mannered, smoothy drinking, gentleman of the club, seems to have gone off the rails and turned into a beer swilling, loud mouthed hard man, (just ask David Kirk). Truth is Chris, as I was catching you on that last lap at Oliver’s Mount the thought that went through my head was “What’s going to happen if I overtake”, so I backed off a bit. Seems Nicola had the same dilemma at G’bro 3 Tops, brave of her to finish only 2 seconds behind you but obviously couldn’t find the courage to go past. I suppose there is a plus side to this, keep it up and no one will overtake you, and soon you’ll find you’re winning every race, as long as you’re sober enough to make it to the start line.

Just as a bit of an aside, has anyone seen the brilliant BBC series “Origins Of Us” with Dr Alice Roberts. First episode described how our human descendants ventured out over the African plains by evolving a body that was designed to run, that’s me I thought, obviously I’m in touch with my distant ancestry. Second episode showed how when we learned to cook it gave us a critical advantage over other human like species, that’s me too I thought, cooking breakfasts every morning for guests and meals in the evening for the family, I must be really at one with nature. To be honest I couldn’t really follow the third episode, something about how our brain size made us more cleverer than other animals.

Actually my brain just clicked into gear and realized that Chris Ellis is the Forum Moderator, so no one is going to get to read this anyway.

After asking for constructive comments after cancelling the run here is one we received from a non-club member from the Isle of Man

.....thanks for letting me know Brenda - it's a real shame, I visit my parents in New
Marske about this time every year (to escape the TT!) and I was looking forward
to the race. I have no idea why it isn't popular. The distance is good, setting
lovely, support and marshalling ace... and after last years fog, I was really
looking forward to seeing the estate properly!

I hope cancelling it creates a renewed interest - you don't know what you've got
'till its gone....

All the best with future events,

Twas the night before Christmas, inside houses all around Whitby little children were sitting in front of their cosy fires, watching the lights twinkle on the Christmas tree, putting out a mince pie for Santa, some carrots for his reindeer and hoping that in the morning he will have been and made their dreams come true.
Outside it was already cold and frosty, too chilly for most to venture out, but on the West Cliff there was a gathering taking place, a bunch of complete idiots dressed in Hi-Viz clothing were out to try and kid themselves that one more training session would somehow make up for a week or more of excessive eating and drinking.

Neil: “Hi folks, nice to see you all out on such a cold night, and being Christmas Eve an’ all”.

Everyone; “Mumble Mumble”.

Neil: “Well tonight being Christmas Eve we’re just going to have an easy session, in fact just a nice run around the town”.

Dave H: “Bloody hell he’s finally gone soft, has he got a heart after all”?

Neil: “And thinking about it we should take in the Barratts estate so we can all see the pretty Christmas lights”.

Dave: “ That confirms it, he’s definitely suffered a nasty bang to the head”.

Mike: “Come on Dave give him a break, it’s just the Christmas spirit coming through”.

Dave: “Not Bloody likely, there’ll be a catch you’ll see”

Nicola: “Dave, do you have to swear all the time”

Dave: “You can bloody shut up an’ all”.

Neil: “Come on folks calm down, it is Christmas after all”. Now as I was saying, just an easy session tonight,…….BUT…”

Dave: “I knew it, I knew there’d be a bloody but”

(A stare from Neil)

Neil: “But…, as next week is New Years Eve and they’ll be no training, I’ve set you all a few sessions to do over Christmas, well actually 12 in all, just to keep the winter training going. So lets get started and I’ll explain it all as we run.”

(So off we all set, past the Royal and down the Kyber pass)

Neil: “Right now for the 12 Christmas sessions, and I’ve made them into a song to help you remember them all. It goes like this…….

“Ont’ first day of Christmas Neil set for me,

(An abrupt interruption from Jo Braithwaite)

Jo: “Can we stop here, cause I need a wee”.
Neil: “Well not what I had in mind but it does rhyme”.
Jo: “No, I do need a wee”
Danni “And me”.
Nicola “Me too”
Rob “Actually while we’re here”.
Jimmy “Oh sugar, me too”
Neil: “I don’t know the same every week, can’t you all go before you come out.
Go on then but be quick”.

(5 minutes later, and we’re on our way again)

Neil: “Now where were we……….,

Ont’ second day of Christmas Neil set for me,
Two Town Laps,
And a warm up with a stop for a wee,
---------
Ont’ third day of Christmas Neil set for me,
Three Mayfield Roads,
Two Town Laps,
And a warm up with a stop for a wee,
---------
Ont’ fourth day of Christmas Neil set for me,
Four Pier Strides,
Three Mayfield Roads,
Two Town Laps,
And a warm up with a stop for a wee,

And on we went all around town, running, singing, taking in the pretty lights and generally getting into the Christmas spirit. Eventually we got back to Royal Crescent just as we completed the song.

------------

Ont’ Twelfth day of Christmas Neil set for me,
Twelve Spa Drives,
Eleven Royal Crescents,
Ten Zig Zags,
199 Church Steps,
Eight Kyber Passes,
Seven Feeling Goods,
Six White House Loops,
Five….Minutes……Rest,
Four Pier Strides,
Three Mayfield Roads,
Two Town Laps,
And a warm up with a stop for a wee,

----------

And a final word from Dave

“And if he thinks I’m doing all that over Christmas he’s got another bloody thing coming”.

Merry Christmas Everyone.

Hi All, as stated on the Home Page the Eskdale Eureka Fell Race has been Postponed. Dave Parry says: "As you may be aware the Eureka is postponed with a POSSIBLE date of 30.1.11. when we might try again. We are hopeful the Guisborough Woods and Captain Cooks races will go ahead as these are tightly contained and near to larger urban areas." Keep an eye on http://www.eskvalleyfellclub.org/

Just to inform those who were planning on entering the Gateshead International XC event this year.....Unfortunately the decision has been made to cancel the event this year due to cut backs within the council in relation to its poor interest in recent years leading to it being poor value for money!!

To spice things up a bit this year we are planning to have a male pairs competition within the NYSD races. After the next XC each person that has ran will be paired up and points will be awarded on positions that they finish in. Each runners best 4 positions from the year will be used and at the end of the season we will have the best NYSD Pairs award. This gives ever runner a chance to win something no matter where you finish in the field. Unfortunately this can only work for the men this year due to numbers but hopefully will be ran for woman next year or if we think of some way to work it out! The prize will be a romantic meal for two (only kidding!!)
