Topic "Marathon Running" a message from Mike Clarke

Marathon Running; Barcelona; Brotherhood of Man; and other stuff.

As some of you know I recently went on a little holiday adventure with the Clubs Marathon running Dynamic Duo Don & Jo Abbott. Now naturally this wasn’t just a holiday (I don’t think they ever go on “just a holiday”), the destination was Barcelona and of course it involved running a Marathon. Now I’m not going to bore you with a day by day account of what we got up to, we had a lovely time thank you, the flights were good, our apartment very nice, the weather was lovely, we survived a week without getting mugged or robbed and managed to avoid getting caught up in a riot (just)!
And as for the Marathon.
Joanne ran a very credible 3:43:50, nowhere near her PB but a good time and her best marathon in 2 years.
Donald was going well and on for a time of just over 4 hours but unfortunately had to drop out, he was carrying an injury and with a busy year coming I think he did the right thing. Thus after the event we were all very sympathetic and didn’t mention once the fact that he only ran 15k.
My mate Andy Fletcher from Cumbria, who some of you know, ran a PB of 3:43:12 and was a very happy man.
Linda Cromwell of Whitby, who some of you know, also ran a PB of 4:20:44 and was just as excited a week after the event as she was at the start.
And me, I also ran a PB of 3:17:23, was very tired at the end and never want to run a Marathon again. 26 miles is a stupid distance to try and run, whoever thought it up should have been shot, and as for those amongst us who regularly run them, well they need certifying.
Which brings me back to Don and Jo.
Having just ran Barcelona they are dusting themselves off and in 2 weeks time will be running London, in May they have a month off, but in June they’re at it again in Lancaster, and all this is just a warm up for the Lakeland 100 in July!! I just don’t know how they do it, I take my hat off to them and was trying to think of a suitable tribute to them and their globetrotting escapades.
Then it came to me, thank goodness for “Brotherhood of Man” (that’s the first time I’ve ever thought that, honest), and thank goodness for the “Barron Knights” (I’ve thought that many times) Don & Jo running around together, running around forever………..

Long ago,
Down in the Town outside M & Co,
Met a young couple named Don’n’Jo,
They fell in love at first sight you know,

Hot was she,
Wearing a skirt well above the knee,
Even with just one eye Don could see,
He knew that it just had to be,

Running around Forever,
Running the Welly together,
Don’n’Jo
Strolling on down the harbour,
He doing his best to charm her,
Don’n’Jo
They knew it wasn't wrong
They found a love so strong
They hit it off alright
Down on the beach all night
They found them on the sand
They saw them lying there, hand-in-hand

Not so long ago,
High on flu tablets in Barceló ,
A not so young couple named Don’n’Jo
Put on their trainers and said lets go,

Fit was she,
Hoping to get close to three thirty,
Don knew that he had an injury,
But off they ran hoping for a P B,

Running around Forever,
Running the World together,
Don’n’Jo
She set off so much faster,
He knew he couldn’t catch her,
Don’n’Jo
Jo ran as ever strong
For Don it all went wrong
On the Voll Damm that night
They couldn’t stay upright
They found them on the sand
They saw them lying there, couldn’t stand

---------------------------------------------------------------

If you’re too young and have never heard of “Brotherhood of Man” that’s perfectly understandable so just check out “Angelo” on You Tube.
If you’ve never heard of “The Barron Knights” that’s unforgivable, just listen to “Live in Trouble”.
And by the way no there’s no truth in the rumour that I was once a member of The Barron Knights, I have to admit to taking a lot of inspiration from them though.

Topic "Is There Anyone out There?" a message from Mike Clarke

Back in the Summer on a dark night somewhere high on the Moors, Catherine said to me in the back of Rob’s car, “Don’t do that Mike! and by the way when are you going to start writing on the Forum again, I used to quite look forward to reading your little write ups”.
Well to be honest I just don’t seem to have had the time this year, the months have just slipped by. It’s been another busy year here in B&B land, and what with the afternoon re-runs of “Only Fools and Horses” then the Athletics in Daegu, and to top it all the storyline in “Doctors” has been unmissable.
Anyway finally I’ve found five minutes so thought it was time to make a contribution and try and bring the forum back to life.
So here goes;
(For Catherine)

Cross CountryFile

With 2 NYSD Cross Country meetings already been and gone, there’s a bit of catching up to do, there’s already been some notable performances, notable debuts and notable absentees (yes Chris your not going to get off that lightly).
Starting with the youngsters I have to admit to not knowing most of them but always cheer them on from the side, and it should come as no surprise to see the names Kent and Marstri…….Mastral…….Mastrawl……(Julie’s Kids) featuring prominently, I’m sure if they stick at it they’ll soon be faster than their ‘not getting any younger Mums’. Saying that I’ve got to hand it to Nicola though, she seems to be getting faster as she gets older, having started the Cross Country season as she ran the Summer Fells, still running fast, still mentally strong, and still straightening her hair so as not be mistaken for Rebekah Brooks. Julia has also started really well, I won’t say anything derogatory about Julia, she’s too nice a person for that, Oh except for the moment at Olivers Mount where to encourage me from the side she shouted “Come on Mick, this is easier than a Fell Race” just as well I was too out of breath to answer.
So all’s well with the ladies, 2 wins under their belt, top of the shop already and we hope on the way to yet another series victory.
Bit more mixed for the men though.
We were a bit under strength at Acklam, I’ll get to Chris Ellis later, but first we should focus on the positives. Firstly I seemed to have acquired a new name “Nick Clark” don’t know how that happened but I’m okay with it, he seems to be doing better than Mick Clarke ever did. Secondly the club seems to have acquired another good runner, cross country debutant Mark Young has made a good start and he’ll only get better, he’s a young man, he’s a new recruit, and I’m sure he finds it fun to run in the NYSD, (there’s a song in there somewhere I think, maybe for another time).
So a disappointing result at Acklam, however Scarborough was a different story. We had a very strong team out at Oliver’s Mount, and Chris Ellis did make it but we’ll get to him in a minute. The team in fact was so strong that as we gathered at the start a good number of us “non counters” decided to play the “finish in the same position as your number game” just to give us something to aim for. On the day this game was won by Alan Bottomley, he paced it brilliantly and got it bang on, number 70 finished 70th, well done Alan, although he was run very close by Paul Smith, number 66 finished 67th. This could make for a good competition for which we could have a trophy at the end of the season (Dave), lowest accumulative difference between race number and position, best four races to count. With all our male race numbers between 50 and 70 this seems to be biased towards us “not so good runners” which is fine by me.
So with us lot meandering around trying to count runners and trying not to get lapped it was easy to forget that at the sharp end there was a race going on, in which our team did rather well, with 6 runners in the top 18, and John Hunter, James Wilson and Paul Butler finishing 4th, 5th and 6th respectively. Good to see Paul Butler still managing to run well even with a poorly knee. In fact it’s been a really up and down year for Paul, he had the highs of the Summer Fell series, winning almost all of them, then the low of picking up a mystery knee injury, then the joy when Steps announced they were reforming, only to be shortly followed by the devastating news that West Life were calling it a day. Life can be tough sometimes Paul, although I’m sure you’re spirits are lifted each weekend when you see how well Harry from McFly is doing on Strictly.

And so finally to our notable absentee at Acklam. Chris Ellis, the once mild mannered, smoothy drinking, gentleman of the club, seems to have gone off the rails and turned into a beer swilling, loud mouthed hard man, (just ask David Kirk). Truth is Chris, as I was catching you on that last lap at Oliver’s Mount the thought that went through my head was “What’s going to happen if I overtake”, so I backed off a bit. Seems Nicola had the same dilemma at G’bro 3 Tops, brave of her to finish only 2 seconds behind you but obviously couldn’t find the courage to go past. I suppose there is a plus side to this, keep it up and no one will overtake you, and soon you’ll find you’re winning every race, as long as you’re sober enough to make it to the start line.

Just as a bit of an aside, has anyone seen the brilliant BBC series “Origins Of Us” with Dr Alice Roberts. First episode described how our human descendants ventured out over the African plains by evolving a body that was designed to run, that’s me I thought, obviously I’m in touch with my distant ancestry. Second episode showed how when we learned to cook it gave us a critical advantage over other human like species, that’s me too I thought, cooking breakfasts every morning for guests and meals in the evening for the family, I must be really at one with nature. To be honest I couldn’t really follow the third episode, something about how our brain size made us more cleverer than other animals.

Actually my brain just clicked into gear and realized that Chris Ellis is the Forum Moderator, so no one is going to get to read this anyway.

Topic "Merry Christmas" a message from Mike Clarke

Twas the night before Christmas, inside houses all around Whitby little children were sitting in front of their cosy fires, watching the lights twinkle on the Christmas tree, putting out a mince pie for Santa, some carrots for his reindeer and hoping that in the morning he will have been and made their dreams come true.
Outside it was already cold and frosty, too chilly for most to venture out, but on the West Cliff there was a gathering taking place, a bunch of complete idiots dressed in Hi-Viz clothing were out to try and kid themselves that one more training session would somehow make up for a week or more of excessive eating and drinking.

Neil: “Hi folks, nice to see you all out on such a cold night, and being Christmas Eve an’ all”.

Everyone; “Mumble Mumble”.

Neil: “Well tonight being Christmas Eve we’re just going to have an easy session, in fact just a nice run around the town”.

Dave H: “Bloody hell he’s finally gone soft, has he got a heart after all”?

Neil: “And thinking about it we should take in the Barratts estate so we can all see the pretty Christmas lights”.

Dave: “ That confirms it, he’s definitely suffered a nasty bang to the head”.

Mike: “Come on Dave give him a break, it’s just the Christmas spirit coming through”.

Dave: “Not Bloody likely, there’ll be a catch you’ll see”

Nicola: “Dave, do you have to swear all the time”

Dave: “You can bloody shut up an’ all”.

Neil: “Come on folks calm down, it is Christmas after all”. Now as I was saying, just an easy session tonight,…….BUT…”

Dave: “I knew it, I knew there’d be a bloody but”

(A stare from Neil)

Neil: “But…, as next week is New Years Eve and they’ll be no training, I’ve set you all a few sessions to do over Christmas, well actually 12 in all, just to keep the winter training going. So lets get started and I’ll explain it all as we run.”

(So off we all set, past the Royal and down the Kyber pass)

Neil: “Right now for the 12 Christmas sessions, and I’ve made them into a song to help you remember them all. It goes like this…….

“Ont’ first day of Christmas Neil set for me,

(An abrupt interruption from Jo Braithwaite)

Jo: “Can we stop here, cause I need a wee”.
Neil: “Well not what I had in mind but it does rhyme”.
Jo: “No, I do need a wee”
Danni “And me”.
Nicola “Me too”
Rob “Actually while we’re here”.
Jimmy “Oh sugar, me too”
Neil: “I don’t know the same every week, can’t you all go before you come out.
Go on then but be quick”.

(5 minutes later, and we’re on our way again)

Neil: “Now where were we……….,

Ont’ second day of Christmas Neil set for me,
Two Town Laps,
And a warm up with a stop for a wee,
---------
Ont’ third day of Christmas Neil set for me,
Three Mayfield Roads,
Two Town Laps,
And a warm up with a stop for a wee,
---------
Ont’ fourth day of Christmas Neil set for me,
Four Pier Strides,
Three Mayfield Roads,
Two Town Laps,
And a warm up with a stop for a wee,

And on we went all around town, running, singing, taking in the pretty lights and generally getting into the Christmas spirit.
To spice things up a bit this year we are planning to have a male pairs competition within the NYSD races. After the next XC each person that has ran will be paired up and points will be awarded on positions that they finish in. Each runners best 4 positions from the year will be used and at the end of the season we will have the best NYSD Pairs award. This gives ever runner a chance to win something no matter where you finish in the field. Unfortunately this can only work for the men this year due to numbers but hopefully will be ran for woman next year or if we think of some way to work it out! The prize will be a romantic meal for two (only kidding!!)

With 2 Cross Country meets already been and gone I thought it was time to add my view on recent events, problem was with Cross Country being a constant thing over the winter I needed a name for what may become a regular Forum feature. In a moment of inspiration whilst day dreaming about John Craven I came up with Cross Country File, and yes they will always include the weather for the week ahead.

Cross Country File – NYSD Acklam and Graves Park Relay

What more can I add about Acklam, a great result for both senior teams, personally I was very proud to be 2nd non counter. Of course on the day the weather was the main talking point and I think we all agreed it was pretty wet, but was it? The weather station at Marton (just a short distance from Acklam) recorded 26.7mm of rainfall for the day (that’s just over 1 inch for us Vets), that’s quite wet, whilst the rain gauge at Westerdale on the moors recorded an impressive 42.8mm which is in fact the wettest day of the year so far, so it must have been a wet day, surely. But how about this, on the 19th of June 2005 Hawnby had just under 60mm of rainfall in 1 hour !, quite a deluge? not really, on the 10th of August 2003 Carlton Bank was on the receiving end of 47mm of rain in just 12 minutes ! , now that’s a downpour. The all time record daily rainfall for Britain stands at 314mm (just over a foot) which fell just last year at Seathwaite, Cumbria, that’s over 12 times the amount we had at Acklam last week. But even that seems pretty insignificant to the heaviest rainfall ever recorded. On the 15th of March 1952 Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean registered 1880mm in 1 day, that 6 feet 2 inches, or almost over Chris Ellis’ head ! it didn’t stop raining either, after 3 days they’d had 3929mm and after 5 days 4979mm, more than 16 feet !! From this we can only conclude that at Acklam all we had really was a bit of light drizzle in between brighter spells, so what was all the fuss about? and how did Rob get completely plastered in mud?

In complete contrast yesterday at Graves Park, Sheffield we had no weather at all, it wasn’t warm but certainly not cold, it couldn’t be described as a windy day, the sun never came out although I’m not sure why because it wasn’t particularly cloudy and it didn’t rain one bit.
With the absence of weather to talk about I suppose I’ll have to mention the success of our 40’s vet team, well done Paul, Rob and Neil on your 3rd place, I’ll never again mention a derogatory comment on Paul Butlers taste in music, yesterday he ran like Greased Lightnin’ on that first leg. Not quite good enough for a trophy I think me and my 50’s comrades, Chris E and Dave H, can still be proud of our performance and thanks to Megan for coming all that way to support us.
Driving home I was thinking, you never see an Ellis on their own these days, there’s always at least 2 of them, often more, and I was wondering what is the collective name for a group of Ellises (probably should be Elli), is it a “Troup” or “Swarm” could be a “Brood” or even maybe a “Run of Ellises” don’t really know, any suggestions?

Finallly the Whether for the week ahead.
This week it must be Whether or not to go to training on Friday night. Back on the West Cliff I think I can feel a Kyber Pass coming on and I’m not sure I can face it.

Topic "2010 Summer Fell Series, Summary" a message from Mike Clarke

Well with the nights drawing in and the Winter Fell series now underway I thought it was about time I submitted my write up for the Summer Fell series, so here goes with a quick “summery” of our summer of fun.

“Summary of the Cleveland NEHRA / Northern Summer Series 2010”
Or
“I once beat Paul Butler in a Fell Race” (as I prefer to call it)

It all started way back in April at Carlton bank with Nicola and I huddling together to keep warm, well it was snowing and we were friends at the start of the summer. Nic ran well as she did all summer but we both still got beaten by Will Horsley’s dog! (and he stopped for more wees than Nicola). Just us two from Loftus & Whitby at this one plus Dave Collett (now running for Esk Valley Fell), it finished Dave, Nicola, me, which was to be the order of things for us three until July at Cock Howe when I finally beat Nicola (not that it mattered that much).
Fox and Hounds in May was a good night with a great turnout from our club, Paul Butler made his debut and ran well, trouble was he’d borrowed Rob’s compass (the one with the needle that doesn’t rotate) and got lost, most of us then finished ahead of him so “I once beat Paul Butler in a Fell Race”, it’s not likely to happen again.
Fixtures then came thick and fast with three in June, at Ossy Oiks I managed to stay on Dave Collett’s tail (not as nice as following Nicola), but Dave saw me at the half way turn and was gone. At Whorlton Dan Middlemas came for a run out and finished 8th then came 2nd to Paul Butler at Maybeck, not bad when his only training in summer is a bit of fishing. At Maybeck the midges were out in force, good job Jo Abbot (aka Midge Magnet) came along to watch, kept the midges off us anyway. A good turnout saw our lads (Paul, Dan, Steve and Rob) win the team prize by a mile. Chris Ellis also ran well at Maybeck, taking the over 50 catergory prize.
On then to Cock Howe in July, where Rob squirted his energy gel in my face in the car park, good stuff that gel, it gave me that bit extra that enabled me to beat Nicola for the first time (not that it mattered). Nic still won her usual 3 bottles of wine though, by this stage she was winning more wine than she could drink (obvious lie). Butler battled with Bulman for the lead but this time had to settle for 2nd place.
Three races in August started with a Grueling Gallop at Gribdale, where once again I beat Nicola (am I going on a bit now?), all the same it was a good battle between me, Nic, and Paul Smith. Then onto Guisborough for a Grunt, the route was easy, just follow the Giraffe, trouble was Rob couldn’t get Kangaroo out of his head (high on pills) and ended up lost in the woods. Paul Butler had to settle for 2nd again, and I beat Nic again (okay I’ll shut up now). The Roseberry Topping race at the end of the month was one that we’d all looked forward to for so long, as it happened almost all of us couldn’t make it. Steve Hardy did though, not having a lift didn’t stop him, I’m sure he’d have run all the way there if he’d had to, as it turned out he only had to run from Guisborough, and he wondered why his legs went on the descent.
Last in the series was Castleton show, but of course you know all about that one.

Thinking back we did have a great time on those Tuesday night races, Thursdays were good too, Thursday was recce night, all maps and arguments but good fun. So as I’m out training on the dark winter nights to come I’m sure I’ll think back occasionally to those fell runs, yes it’ll put a smile on my face thinking about those Tuesday nights; Those Thursday nights; …….those Summer Nights.
Oh no, I think I feel a song coming on…………….
(Sorry but this write up was getting a bit boring)

Summer runin' by Bilsdale mast
Summer runin', downhill so fast
I met a girl, faster than me
I overtook, she stopped for a wee

Summer days trainin' away
For uh-oh those summer nights

wella, wella, wella ou

On the moor, on the moor,
Yes we ran very far
Tell me more, tell me more,
Like, does Steve have a car?

uhuh, uhuh, uhuh
uhuh
Nic ran by me, she was the champ
I fell in a ditch, got myself damp
We both got beat, by Horsley’s hound
Paul got lost, on Fox and Hound

Summer run, the race has begun,
But uh-oh those midge bites

wella, wella, wella ou

On the moor, on the moor
do we go left or go right?
Can’t be sure, can’t be sure,
Rob’s as high as a Kite?

uhuh, uhuh, uhuh
uhuhaha
uhuh, uhuh, uhuh
uhuhaha

Three bottles, for makin’ the grade
She drank the lot, without lemonade
Then passed out under the dock
didn’t wake, til ten o'clock

Summer thing, come on lets sing,
for uh-oh those summer nights

On the moor, on the moor
Up and over the crag
Making sure, making sure
That you’ve got your bumbag

Shubaba shubaba shubaba
Shubaba shubaba shubaba shubababa….yeh
shubaba

Guisborough Grunt, we had a Giraffe
Rob got lost, he didn’t laugh
At the finish, nowhere to be seen
Oh hello Rob, where have you been

Summer heat, blistering feet
but oh-no those summer nights

wo wo wo

On the moor, on the moor
Just round one more bend
Not so sure, not so sure
Just when will it end?

It turned colder,…… that's where it ends
I asked Nic,….. are we still friends?
To be back next year is my vow,
Wonder what I will do now?

Summer dreams, fell runin’ teams,

For… ohh,…...those…Summer Nights,

Feet so sore, feet so sore

If you want to sing along the video’s on youtube.
Or if you want the entire Grease soundtrack I’m sure Paul Butler will be happy to Bluetooth it to you, if you can get close enough to him.
