Yorkshire Championships - Sheffield - 10th May 2008

Day 1
In warm (24C) and humid conditions the first day of the Yorkshire T&F Championships was held at the impressive Don Valley Stadium in Sheffield on Saturday 10th May. 5 athletes travelled over to South Yorkshire to take part: Alec Duffield, Angharad Owen, Megan Ellis and Lewis and Grace Rodgers. Alec was first to compete in the senior men's 1500. Although finishing in a respectable 4th place he was disappointed with his run - feeling under-par from the first lap and finishing in a time below expectations. Next up was Megan Ellis - in the women's 3000m (seniors and juniors running together) Megan made a good start - staying with the leading group for the first 2 laps, but left behind in no man's land her confidence ebbed. A spirited defence of her position in the last 200m gave her a PB and a place on the podium - second junior woman and silver medal. Angharad Owen's continued improvement and return to form saw her gain a big PB in the senior women's 800 heats, knocking at least 4 seconds off her best time. In a tightly contested race Angharad was boxed into the leading group and stayed with them to the finish. In the final later in the day, Angharad came 7th - the earlier effort perhaps taking the edge off her performance. Grace Rodgers continues her current superb form - leading the U15 girls 800m heats to finish 1st with a first lap time of under 70 seconds. Grace went on to finish 1st in the final to gain a gold medal, a PB by 1 second and a place on the podium. In the u20 men's 800m final, Lewis Rodgers was running a shorter than usual distance. He kept his nerve and was rewarded with a substantial PB taking four seconds off his best time.

Day 2
Only Dani Braithwaite made the long journey to Sheffield for Day 2 of the Championships.  After leaving the NE in gloomy conditions with a temperature of 13C the temperature in the stadium was in the mid twenties. With hot conditions Dani was pleased that the U15 1500m race would be a straight final.  Always in the right place Dani was in a group of 6 as they passed the bell.   On the back straight the leading group had decreased to 3 with Dani sure of a medal.  Sally Smith, from Wakefield, produced a very fast finish to win in a time of 4.55.99 with Dani 2 seconds behind to get a well deserved silver medal with a time of 4.57.77.  Dani followed the trend set on the first day with a massive pb knocking a further 7 seconds off the time she recorded at the recent NYSD meeting. Both Grace and Dani, after competing in the School’s District Trials, now travel to Wigan to compete in the Northern Championships with their confidence sky high.

Track & Field Open Shildon 13th April 2008

Jack Cooper had a great start to his track season breaking his own club record in Shot Putt and recording pb’s in the 100metres and 200 metres.  In the 100m heat he was third in a time of 14.6  and he bettered this in the final finishing in second place in 14.1.  He was also 2nd in Shot Putt with a distance of 7.39 metres and was 4th in the 200m in 29.6.

In the 800m Shannon Parkin and brother Nathan recorded times of 2.57 and 2.41 respectively and in the senior race Steve Mussett finished in 2.11.

In the U11 600m Jono Urban equalled his time from the Cyril Elliott meeting with a time of 2.26.

Dave Parkin was 4th in the Senior Men’s 3k in a time of 9.50.

Cyril Elliott track meeting 29th March 2008

The first track and field meeting of 2008 was held in dull cloudy conditions with a strong breeze making conditions difficult on the home straight.

Coming off the back of a good X/C season Grace Rodgers and Dani Braithwaite were running in the 800m.  A strong opening lap in 68 secs saw Grace in 2nd place and Dani 4th.  Grace moved easily into 1st place along the back straight and moved away from the other girls to win in 2.21.5 which was a club record and knocked 13 seconds off her pb.  A strong finish by Dani moved her into 3rd place in 2.27.5 which again was well inside the old club record and knocked an equally impressive 9 seconds off her pb.

Lewis Rodgers led from the gun in the U20 1500m and he withstood a strong challenge in the home straight to win in 4.20.5 which again knocked 3 seconds from his pb.

After a winter of football Shane Hicks ran the U13 800m and he finished in 6th place in 2.46.

Georgina Estill was another running the 800m for the first time and she finished in 6th place in 3.04.2.

8 year old Jono Urban ran his first ever track race in the U11 600m and a strong finish saw him finish in 4th place in 2.25.8.

With three pb’s and 2 victories the young club members had a good start to the season and hopefully we can build on their successes.

The next meeting is at Shildon on Sunday 13th April, the closing date is Monday 7th April and no late entries are acceptable.  The programme of events is on the web site.
