Fell Running

Cleveland Way Relay 2009 Sunday 28th June

new A TEAM - Report

Loftus and Whitby ‘A’ had their usual good start with Dan and then Steve out in front. NYMAC ‘A’ were looking a bit glum, (or maybe it was the weather.) I think they thought it was going to be the usual large gap between them and Loftus and Whitby ‘A’.

Rob Cole only reduced the ‘A’ team’s lead from 6 minutes to about 5 minutes, thanks to John Hunter’s “I’m back” performance. Ryan then ran his leg the hard way by opting for a lot of steps rather than a swim on the beach.

Still in the lead, Stephen Musset massively increased our lead for the second year running. Dave Collett and Stewart Darge stayed in front but from here onwards NYMAC ‘A’ were slowly chipping away at our lead.

Lewis however had the performance of the day in knocking 3.5 minutes off Bill Bingham’s course record. He handed over to Tom in 57:28. On his climb up Roseberry Topping he was looking back to see where Paul Lowe was, but was still 14 minutes ahead.

Nathan and Julie ran well, but we joined all the other teams in the mass-start at 2pm but had an 11 minute lead. Nathan may have broken a course record but no time was recorded..
Paul and Steve were in a close battle for positions, between Loftus & Whitby ‘B’, York Acorn and NYMAC ‘A’ but our overall lead held.

To give Dave Horness something else to moan about, there was a huge thunderstorm for most of his leg. He was not best pleased when he handed over to Angharad. With two legs to go, there were worried looks forming as the lead was getting very small. Angharad ran extremely fast but still seemed to be well down on last year’s time. Maybe it was the thunderstorm.
So it all came down to Dan, on his second leg, who we can always rely on to gain us some time. We were only 4 minutes behind – could he  gain it back?

Sadly, Dan lost a further 4 minutes to the ‘unknown’ Jim Bulman.
Well done to all the runners and to NYMAC ‘A’

Steve Hardy.
