NYSD X/C Richmond 5th March 2006
(From our XC correspondent)
The final fixture of the season was held at Richmond and the conditions were ideal with bright sunshine and firm underfoot.
The senior men welcomed back Tom, Neil and Alec and also included Steve Hepples, having his first run of the season.
After the first short lap Steve and Rob Cole led the field closely followed by John, Dan and Alec.  After completing 1 large lap Steve had opened up a gap of 50m but unfortunately was suffering the effects of a recent illness and had to drop out. Undeterred John moved into 2nd place, closely followed by Dan, Alec, Andrew, Rob, Stephen Mussett and Tom.   With the Senior Men’s title almost certainly won the men were looking to finish with a final decisive victory and on the last lap they all improved on their positions within the race with John and Dan having their best runs for many a year.  Who said John was a vet!  Official results haven’t been published to date but on video evidence we had John 2nd, Dan 4th, Alec 8th, Andrew 12th, Tom 17th, Stephen 21st and Rob 22nd.  This gave us a total of 64 and we think Hartlepool had a total of 89.  The team counters were well backed by Steve Hardy, Neil Duffield, Alan Howard, Chris Ellis, Dave Horness, Mally Peggs, Jimmy O’Brian and Gary Divine.  The men celebrated in style with a bottle of very expensive champagne provide by Tony and Brenda.
Not to be outdone by the men the ladies also had to perform well to hold onto 3rd team place and pressure was on Nicola especially to beat her rival from Thirsk to win the vets individual title.  Both Nicola and Angharad were near the front after the first small lap, closely followed by Joyce and Adele.  As the race progressed Angharad grew in confidence and finished with her best ever position of 6th.  Nicola swapped places a few times with her rival but the longer course of 6k suited her and her strength and determination showed through as she moved comfortably further away from her rival to finish in her best ever position of 9th.  All the women seemed to appreciate the longer course as they all had their best races ever including Helen who is probably still on a high from her own successful battle with her group of rivals.
Lewis Rodgers was rewarded for his recent hard work in training sessions with a brilliant run.  Running one lap shorter than the senior men Lewis was able to stay with the front group of 12 runners to come into the finishing straight alongside 2 Middlesbrough AC U17 athletes.  It was only on the sprint that he lost out finishing in 3rd place, 20m behind the winner.  Hopefully his recent performances will gain him selection for the North Yorkshire team at the English Schools Cross Country.
In the u15 girls race Megan and Hope reversed their final positions from the Stockton X/C with Megan finishing in 5th place and Hope 9th.
In the U13 girls race Grace was soon at the front of the field with Dani Briathwaite, running her first NYSD league race, Nicole, Amy and Catherine in the middle of the field.  As the race progressed Dani moved through to finish just behind Grace in 5th place.
Samuel looked more determined at the start of the U13 boys race when he set off with the leaders instead of giving them a head start.  He showed a top ten position after the first small lap finally gaining another place to finish in 9th place.
All in all a very satisfactory afternoon for the club, with certain individuals setting a high standard which will require hard work and commitment to maintain and improve on in future races.
If the hat fits wear it!

Stockton XC RACE REPORT
(See gallery for pictures)
After the 6 week gap following the Whitby event there was a lot to play for at the penultimate event of the season at Stockton . The seniors were depleted with Alec,Neil,Tom and Adele all performing at the winter Olympics in the après ski drinking event.

With a comfortable lead of 8 points the aim of the men’s team was to finish in the first 3. The depth and spirit of the team was evident with John, Dan, Andrew, Stephen M, Rob and Steve H all having their best results of the season finishing 4 th,7 th,13 th,19 th,26thand 33 rd respectively. Hartlepool Burn Road were evidently trying to avenge their narrow defeat at Whitby fielding a very strong team which proved to be too good for Loftus on the day scoring a very low score of 77 points against the 102 points scored by Loftus, which was good enough to give them 2 nd place. With only one event left the men need to score a further 10points to guarantee them the league title for the first time ever.

There were some good performances in the junior races with Grace and Amy being near the front of the u/13 girls race. Hope bounced to form with a brilliant 4 th place, and Megan 8 th in the u/15 girls race.

Lewis was rewarded for his recent hard work with a 4 th place in the u/17 race and on this form he should justify his late selection for the North York’s school team at the inter county event in March.

Nicola was the first Loftus runner in the ladies race finishing in the early teens and she was followed by Angharad,Julie ,Joyce and Helen.

Full results will soon be available on this site and with 30mins of video available courtesy of Brenda featuring every rave analysis of everyone’s style has been noted so beware at the forthcoming training sessions

Billingham Marsh House should be congratulated for using the area which was available to very good effect but the local Tesco superstore should be severely reprimanded for the thousands of plastic bags which littered the perimeter fence.

28.01.06 The last fixture which we successfully hosted at Caedmon (results) saw the senior men win for the 4th time by the nearest of margins, just 1point, had the result been tied with Burn Road we would have lost on countback. With 2 fixtures left they now require 23 points to guarantee victory for the first time in the clubs history. The ladies are currently in 3rd place with 48 points behind Rowntrees 57 points and Middlesbrough and Cleveland 54

The u/13 girls are also in 3rd place with 16 points, Darlington have 22 and Middlesbrough A.C. 21

After 4 events in the individual points tables Samuel Hutchinson is in 4th place in the u/13 boys, Grace Rodgers is 2nd in u/13 girls, and Megan Ellis is 5th in the u/15 girls. Alec Duffield is 3rd in the u/20 men from only 3 events.

In the senior ladies Catherine Hare has the max number of points from her 3 races but is currently in 4th place, Angharad Owen leads the u/20 section with 30 points and Nicola Kent and Joyce Hutchinson are 3rd and 4th in the vet 1 group.

John Hunter leads the vet men with 38 points and Dan Middlemas is 5th in the senior men.
T
