The final fixture of the NYSD league was held at Richmond.  Even with Spring around the corner conditions were the worst of the season.  With the rain falling as the first race started the course became very slippery making some of the steeper uphill and downhill sections very difficult.

With a lot at stake for the senior men they welcomed back Alec Duffield who was still recovering from his breathing problems.  Undeterred he ran a brilliant race to finish in second place behind Gary Dunn from Thirsk and Sowerby.  Unfortunately John Hunter had to pull out just after the start so the pressure was on other team members to hold on to their league title.  Dan Middlemas, who had another good run to finish in 9th place, Stephen Mussett 15th, Andrew Pearson 21st, Paul Wildmore 22nd and Steve Hardy, who excelled in the tough conditions finishing in 26th place, were the 6 counters.  Our total of 94 points was insufficient to beat New Marske and Hartlepool Burn Road but with a three point cushion going into this race we came away victorious to retain the league title.

Megan Ellis is now getting the results we knew she was capable of.  Following her victory in the School’s Inter County race on Saturday at York she had a brilliant run to finish in 4th place her highest ever league placing.  Still in her first year at the U17 level her rise in this senior women’s race has been phenomenal.  Just behind her in 9th place was Julie Mastrolonardo, Nicola Kent in 12th and Julia Jackson running in her second cross country was the next counter in 32nd place to give the team 2nd place behind, once again, Middlesbrough and Cleveland.

For the club it was very encouraging to see that the leading club runner in both senior races was the youngest member of the team.

Preceding the league races the host club, R & Z had organised an U11 race on a shortened version of the course.  Shane Hicks started quickly and opened up a big gap on the rest of the field.  He maintained his speed to record a decisive victory and we will look forward to see what he can achieve on the track in his age group.

In the U13 boys race Jack Cooper finished in 24th place and in the U15 race Samuel Hutchinson was 11th.

The U13 girl’s team had an outside chance of winning the league title but on the day the strong Shildon team won the team event with our girls finishing in 2nd place.  Grace Rodgers, who had been sidelined with a calf injury couldn’t continue with her 100% record finishing in 6th place.  This was still sufficient to give her the league title.  Dani Braithwaite has also had problems with illness and in her first race back finished 13th, Nicole Hutchinson was 18th and Catherine Urban continued her rapid improvement finishing in 24th place.  With Dani, Nicole and Catherine all being in the same age group next year and a number of younger members moving up to this age group we should be able to have a very competitive team for next season.

Hope Rodgers in her second race of the weekend finished in 7th place in the U15 Girls and Lewis Rodgers was a clear winner in the U17 race.

The final positions are not yet available but we have taken three of the individual titles, Grace Rodgers U13, Lewis Rodgers U17 and Brenda Hare V3 Women.

In the team events the Senior Men have retained their title with the Senior Ladies and U13 Girls both finishing in 2nd place.

Cross Country - Stockton 04.02.07 - Report

The penultimate fixture for this season was held at Blakeston School Stockton where the conditions were bright and sunny with a bit of frost still in the ground. The number of athletes was down in the majority of races with a lot of juniors missing due to school fixtures on the previous day.
The first race saw Jack Cooper have his best race of the season finishing in 13th place. Due to illness we were missing two of our leading runners in the u/13 girl’s race but Grace Rodgers continued her 100% record with a very good victory. Catherine Urban in her first season had a brilliant confident run to finish in 22nd place with Jess Parkes two places further back
The team finished in 6th place but a victory in the last race at Richmond would still give them an outside chance of winning the league.
Hope Rodgers continued her good run of form with a 6th place in the u/15girls race
Our club runners were very prominent at the front of the ladies race with Megan Ellis having her best run of the season to finish in 4th place, Julia Mastrolonardo was 6th, Nicola Kent 8th and Joyce Hutchinson 12th to give tem a team score of 30points but they were again beaten by M&C.
The u/17 race was severely depleted but Lewis Rodgers 2nd place was good enough to give him the individual league title.
The men’s team went into this fixture with a lead of 5 points over Burn Rd but they were concerned about missing some of their leading runners through injury and other commitments.
They were boosted when John Hunter declared his intention to run after a month out with an ankle injury and he worked his way through the field to finish in 12th place. Dan Middlemass had his highest position of the season with a great run to finish in 5th place; they were well backed up by Andrew Pearson 14th, Neil Duffield 19th, Rob Williamson 21st and Paul Wildmore 26th. The team finished in 2nd place which reduced their lead over Burn Rd to 3 points with one fixture remaining.

North Yorkshire Schools - Catterick 03.02.07 - Report

The schools County Championships were held at Catterick where the conditions were ideal underfoot and weather Spring-like.
These races are the selection races for the schools National Championships which will be held this year at Leeds and are very important in the school athletic calendar.
The first race of the day was the Inter Girls and the standard in this group is very high. Megan Ellis now has the confidence and determination to run in the first group and very quickly a group of 6 had broken clear. At the end Megan was delighted to finish in 4th place, giving her selection for the county in the nationals for the first time, this is due reward for the hard work she has put in. Even though she is a year young Hope Rodgers just missed out on selection finishing in 10th place, she now goes on to run in the inter county fixture.
In the Junior Girls race Grace Rodgers also at the bottom of the age group also finished in 4th place again gaining selection at her first attempt. In the same race Amy Pearson was 28th and Catherine Bainbridge 25th.
In the Junior Boys race Samuel Hutchinson finished in 24th place and Nicole Hutchinson was 18th in Year 7 race.

Cross Country - Whitby 14.01.07 - Report

The 4th fixture of the NYSD league was held at Caedmon school, Whitby. Considering the amount of rain which has fallen recently, the conditions underfoot were perfect, with only a strong breeze causing the runners any problems.
The Loftus & Whitby athletes had a very successful day with individual victories for Grace Rodgers, Lewis Rodgers and Steve Hepples. The u/13 girls’ race was the most competitive this season and included the Yorkshire runner M. Winzer and the North East champion K. Templeman. Grace, who finished 3rd in the Yorkshires and was the winner of the last two league fixtures; together with Dani Braithwaite, were in a bunch of five who broke away. Climbing the last hill Grace was tracking Maddy Winzer and she made a decisive move as they strode downhill towards the finish. Grace, who now exudes confidence, won by 2 sec. Dani had a brilliant run to finish 4th and in the team event they were well backed by Nicole Hutchinson 14th, Jess Parkes 30th and Catherine Urban 33rd. Their total of 49 points was just beaten by Nestle Rowntree on 47 but they now head the league table by 3 points.
Lewis Rodgers gained his first victory in the league when he was a clear winner of the u/17 race having over a minute to spare.
Steve Hepples dominated the senior men’s race from the gun even though the standard of athletes at the front of the race was very strong. At the finish he had a winning margin of 20sec from Dan Augustes and Jonathan Taylor. The men’s team were slightly depleted through sickness and injury but such is the strength in depth they were able to win the team race by 12 points from Hartlepool Burn Road. Other counters were Dan Middlemass 12th, Andrew Pearson 20th, Bill Bingham 29th, Rob Williamson 34th and Paul Wildmore 36th.
The combined senior womens’ and u/17 race was slightly marred by an incident when a spectator misdirected the leading runner. This caused a bit of confusion among the following runners but had little bearing on the final positions. The Loftus and Whitby team were prominent at the front of the race but they just missed out on the team event with M&C scoring 35 points to the home club’s 41. The scoring runners were Julie Mastrolonardo 7th, Angharad Owen 9th, Megan Ellis 11th and Nicola Kent 14th.

Junior Report

This was the fourth year for this event and in perfect conditions for cross country the numbers taking part far exceeded any previous year.  It was also good to see four schools taking part in the Schools' Trophy.  After race 1 Ruswarp were in the lead with 24 points, unfortunately for them they could not provide the full compliment of runners for race 2. Once again Airy Hill were the winners by 10 points from Lythe with Lealhom 3rd. Loftus & Whitby runners had an excellent day with Shane Hicks 1st and Joe Hoggarth 2nd in the Year 5/6 race and Zach Estrill 3rd in the 3/4 race.  In the girls, Charly Rodgers was 1st in the 3/4 race and Georgina Estrill 3rd in the 5/6 race.

Thanks to everyone who ran and to those who supported them, hope to see you all next year.

Tony Hare.

Yorkshire Cross Country Championships 06.01.07
This year the championships were held at Skipton, the course was the most demanding I have seen with numerous short steep hills, plenty of mud and a long hill to finish everybody off, 400metres from the finish.

Selection for the Yorkshire team is based on these championships and over the past few seasons we have seen Grace and Hope Rodgers, Rachel Lightfoot, Catherine Hare and Alec Duffield all representing their county.  This year only Grace was selected, but there were some very good performances from other members.  Unfortunately for Alec a re-occurrence of his chest problems forced him to drop out after the first lap.

Grace, Dani Braithwaite and Nichole Hutchinson were in the first race and when they left the park to run the hilly section around the golf course both Grace and Dani were in the first five.  Upon returning to the park area Grace was in fourth place but Dani had dropped back to twelfth, Nicole was having a brilliant run inside the top forty.

Along the finish straight Grace pulled into bronze position and finished in the same time as the second athlete.  Dani was disappointed to finish 15th but Nicole continued to go past other runners to finish 32nd.  With over 80 runners in the field she was delighted with her finishing position.  The team finished in 5th place only 3 points behind 3rd place.  Next year both Dani and Nichole will have another chance in the U13 race.  For Grace this was her first county medal in cross country and holds a remarkable record of being selected for the last three years in this U13 age group.

Hope Rodgers had a solid race to finish in 24th and she is now getting her rewards for a few weeks of consistent training.

Samuel Hutchinson was our only runner in the U15 boys and after a slowish start he worked his way through to finish in 39th place.  With another year in this age group, once he gets the confidence to go with the leaders, he could well be in contention for selection.

Lewis Rodgers was another who had a chance of being picked following his recent running in the NYSD fixtures.  With two laps of the park to start Lewis was in the mid twenties as they left this section with a strong group of Leeds runners dictating the fast pace at the front.  Lewis spent the whole of the big lap pulling back places to finish 10th which was a big improvement from last year but upon reflection if he had committed himself a bit earlier a top eight position may have been possible.

Megan Ellis, however, did commit herself in the U17 girls race, and as they ran around the golf course she was in the top five, when they returned to this area Megan had dropped a few places and a good finish saw her come home in 10th place which was an excellent result considering she also has another year to do at this age.

In the Senior Men’s race we only had two representatives and by this time the whole of the course was very muddy and slippery.  Paul Wildmore and Bob Howard both battled their way through to finish in 112th and 151st respectively.

XC Thirsk
The course at Thirsk is dead flat but the strong winds and occasional heavy rain made this the hardest race so far in the league.
In the u/13 race Jack Cooper improved on his first race to finish in 18th place, the girls race saw us with a full complement of 4 runners and the wind made the race very tactical. With no one willing to take the lead early in the race there were still 5 in contention as they entered the finish straight down the racecourse. Grace Rodgers was the first to make a move and she pulled away to win by 5 sec., just behind Dani Braithwaite moved into 2nd place but she was caught just before the line to finish in 3rd place. With Nicole Hutchinson in 13th and Catherine Urban 27th we had a winning score of 44points.
In the u/15 Samuel Hutchinson finished in 12th place despite twisting an ankle and in the girls race Hope Rodgers continued  her improved form to finish 5th and Amy Pearson was 16th.
Lewis Rodgers again just missed out on top spot finishing 2nd in the u/17 race.
The ladies were a little depleted but they only just missed out on winning the team event by 7 points from M&C.
Julie Mastolonardo again had a brilliant race to finish in 4th  place ,she was well supported by Angharad Owen 7th ,Nicola Kent 11th and Joyce Hutchinson 22nd. Julia Jackson in her first race for the club was 34th Brenda Hare 41st and Helen Bostock 48th.
The men’s team were pleased to have Stephen Heppels on the start line as Alec Duffield was not available following an injury sustained at the Liverpool cross challenge event.
With Dan Augustus from Scarborough also in the field Steve had to work hard to eventually win by 20sec. John Hunter again rolled back the years to finish in 5th place and Dan Middlemass also made the top 10 finishing 8th. With Andrew Pearson 15th and Steve Mussett 16th the club supporters were looking for the 6th counter. Hartlepool had their 6th counter in before Bill Bingham finished 31st. The front group had done sufficient to ensure they won the team event with a score of 76points, Hartlepool were 2nd with 101points.
Providing good backing to the team were Paul Wildmore 33rd Rob Williamson 35th, Steve Hardy 36th and Mark Peggs 42nd. A little further back were Alan Bottomley 63rd.,Dave Horness 66th ,Ian Rodgers 72nd.,Jimmy O’Brian 78th., Malcolm Peggs 93rd and Tony Hare 101st.
With half of the fixtures gone we have three leading their categories, Grace, Brenda and John and the men’s team have a 4point lead with the ladies in second place 2 points behind.
The next fixture is at Whitby on 14th Jan and prior to that we have a strong contingent of juniors and seniors taking part in the Yorkshire champs at Skipton on 6th Jan. (Tony Hare)

REPORTS cont...

XC Guisborough
The second league fixture of the season was held at Laurence Jackson School with the conditions initially bright and sunny which later changed to be blustery and cold.
To encourage the U11s, New Marske included a race for this age group and five of our younger members took part.  Shane Hicks started very quickly and his pace hardly dropped to win by a large margin.  Charlie Rodgers finished very strongly taking second place in the girl’s category and there were also good performances from Brittany Codling, Georgina and Zac Estill.
In the U13 boys’ race Jack Cooper was making his debut and he finished in 23rd place.  The corresponding girls’ race saw us field a full team of four runners and Grace Rodgers showed tremendous determination to record her first league victory, Danny Braithwaite had a good finish to come home in fifth place.  In this race the number of starters were nearly double the number that started at Hartlepool and Nicole Hutchinson finished in 17th place with Catherine Urban in her first race finishing 36th.  With four to count in the team Catherine’s position enabled the team to take second place.
Samuel Hutchinson gained his first points of the season as an U15 with a seventh place and like-wise Hope Rodgers gained her first points with a ninth place and Amy Pearson 12th.
In the senior ladies’ race we had eleven runners representing the club and the front of the race was dominated by the Loftus & Whitby vests.  Julie Mastrolonardo had an exceptional run to finish in sixth place; just behind her were Angharad Owen 9th, Nicola Kent 10th and Megan Ellis in her first senior race, 13th.  These four gave us a total of 38 points which was good enough to give us 1st place in the team race.  Giving good backing were Joyce Hutchinson 20th, Adele Thompson 30th, Joanne Abbott 32nd, Vicky Annis 33rd, Brenda Hare 48th, Jo Braithwaite 54th and Yvonne Herbert 56th.
The senior men’s race saw the club with 21 starters which must be the highest number we have ever had running cross country.  Alec Duffield was first home for the club in fifth place, John Hunter 6th, Dan Middlemas, showing a big improvement from Hartlepool, 9th and Andrew Pearson 16th.  The next two counting members were Steve Mussett 25th and Rob Williamson 29th.  As in the women’s race these six were well backed up. Bill Bingham 31st, Paul Wildmore 32nd, Neil Duffield 38th, Chris Ellis 46th, Mark Peggs 47th and Dave Horness 64th.  There were Loftus & Whitby vests throughout the field with Alan Howard 66th, Darren Fawcett 69th, Ian Rodgers 78th, Alan Bottomley 83rd, Jimmy O’Brian 86th, Adrian Pearson 91st, Tony Hare 110th, Malcolm Peggs 117th and Gary Trillo 118th.
The team total of 90 points was sufficient to win the team event from, surprisingly, Thirsk, who scored 119 points.  Incorporated into the senior race Lewis Rodgers had a brilliant run in the U17 section to finish in second place, only three seconds behind the leader.
With team victories in both senior categories and individual victories for Shane Hicks and Grace Rodgers the club had a most successful day. (Tony)

CROSS COUNTRY RELAYS Whitby 29.10.06

This was a new venture for the club, initially the entries were slow in arriving but by the middle of the final week we had received entries from nearly all the clubs.  We had made a number of changes to the format of the meeting, the numbering system and the administration, so we were hoping everything would run smoothly.
Our usual strong band of helpers soon had the course marked out and the conditions were perfect with a bright sunny day and only a slight breeze.  Everything was ready by 11 a.m. so it was nice not to have any last minute panics and to enjoy a coffee and sandwich before the race.

We amalgamated the U13 girls’and U13 boys’ race so in the first event we had 15 on the start line.  Fergus Roberts from Richmond and Zetland soon opened up an appreciable gap but behind him Dani Braithwaite and Joe Hoggarth, from the home club, were both at the front of the pack. After the first leg Dani came in first girl in 7.24 with a slender lead over Maddy Winzer.  Nicole Hutchinson increased the lead for the girls with a time of 8.19 and she handed over to Grace Rodgers 7.52 who further increased the lead to win the first event for the club in a total time of 23.35 with R & Z second in 24.27.  A second girls' team comprising of Brittany Codling, Georgina Estill and Jess Parkes finished in 8th place with an aggregate time of 26.20 and Catherine Urban ran the first leg for the third team but unfortunately due to injury we were unable to have runners in the second and third leg.
In the boys’ race R & Z built upon the lead given by Fergus Roberts to win in a time of 21.27.  Joe Hoggarth  was second boy in a time of 7.42 and handed over to Jack Cooper who held onto second place with a time of 8.48 and Shain Hicks flew round the last leg recording 7.22 which was the third fastest time of the day to retain second place in a time of 23.52.
The next race was an amalgamation of U15 boys and girls, unfortunately we were unable to have a complete team in the girls’ race but Hope Rodgers and Amy Pearson recorded 8.05 and 9.08 respectively.
The next race was the senior ladies/U17/vet ladies and there were thirteen teams at the start including three from the host club.  Angharad Owen on the first leg finished in fourth place in a time of 15.20 with Julie Mastrolonardo in sixth place for the vets team in 15.42.  Nicky Kent stormed round the second leg of the senior ladies event to bring the team into second place with a time of 15.19.  She handed over to Megan Ellis who had a ten second advantage over the Middlesbrough AC U17 team runner.  Megan held the lead until the last 100 metres when she was passed by Emma Williams but second overall in the race was good enough to win the senior ladies trophy with Middlesbrough AC taking the U17 title.  In the vets’ race following Julie there were strong performances from Joyce Hutchinson 16.43 and Adele Thompson 17.21 to win the vets’ title and to finish in fifth place overall in 49.46.  The Loftus & Whitby senior ladies ‘B’ team comprising of Vicki Annis 17.29, Yvonne Herbert 19.46 and Helen Bostock 19.25 finished in 8th place with a time of 56.40.
In the senior mens’ race, after much chopping and changing,  we fielded two senior and two vet teams with twenty one teams on the start line.  The senior men were lacking some of their top runners but still to turn out 16 runners was a very good achievement.
On the first two legs New Marske opened with a big advantage but this was gradually clawed back by R & Z and Hartlepool Burn Road.  Coming into the final leg the advantage was still with New Marske but a storming last leg from Adam Churchill from Hartlepool in 12.43 saw them take the title with R & Z second and New Marske third.  Loftus and Whitby ‘A’ finished in 11th place after the first leg with Stephen Hardy recording 14.34.  Lewis Rodgers 13.16 and John Hunter 12.34 then pulled the team into 5th place and Paul Wildmore held onto this position with a time of 14.34.
The vet men were always chasing a very fast New Marske team and in the end they finished in 2nd place in 58.46 with Dave Horness 15.14, Rob Williamson 13.57, Chris Ellis 14.58 and Alan Howard 14.47.
The senior men ‘B’ team finished in 11th place with Darren Fawcett 15.16, Rod Lavan 16.57, Ian Rodgers 15.58 and Neil Duffield 14.49.  The vet men ‘B’ team finished in fifth place in their category with Jimmy O’Brian 16.41, Mike Mastrolonardo 16.28, Mally Peggs 16.42 and Alan Bottomley 15.41.
The last race of the day was a new inclusion to the league relays and involved eight runners covering the full range of ages from U13 to seniors, both male and female.  Unfortunately only four teams took up the challenge and Scarborough came out on top in a time of 56.10.  Loftus and Whitby were second in 57.46, Beverley third in 60.45 and New Marske fourth in 61.26.  The Loftus team comprised Dani Braithwaite 7.32, Joe Hoggarth 7.52, Grace Rodgers 8.02, Samuel Hutchinson 6.53, Megan Ellis 7.43, Lewis Rodgers 6.19, Angharad Owen 7.05, and John Hunter 6.20.
The day was a great success for the club with numerous complimentary comments being made about the course and organisation.  Thanks go, as well, to the ladies who spent the whole afternoon keeping everyone refreshed.
If my interpretation of the mechanism of calculating the aggregate trophy is correct we will also have won this award for the first time beating Richmond and Zetland by a mere one point, but this still awaits confirmation.

Cross Country Hartlepool Sunday 15th October 2006

The first fixture of the 2006 – 2007 season was held at Hartlepool where the weather and conditions were ideal for cross country running.

In the U13 girls race we only had Nicole Hutchinson running and she had a very good race finishing in 9th place.  Her brother Samuel has moved up to the U15 age group and he finished in 11th place which was also a very good performance.

In the U15 girls race Hope Rodgers had a very good start but faded towards the end to finish in 11th place and Amy Pearson was four places lower in 15th.

The senior women saw 8 women from the club on the start line, Catherine Hare, returning after a summer cycling in Europe, finished in 2nd place, Angharad Owen continued her improving form finishing in 7th place and these were well backed by Nicky Kent 9th  overall 1st V1, and Julie Mastrolonardo in 12th place.  With a team score of 30 points this would normally be sufficient for a  win but M & C pipped them with 29 points even though their 4th counter was in 14th place.  Joyce Hutchinson had a very gutsy run after injury finishing in 20th place, Adele Thompson had her highest finish in a league race in 26th place and Vicky Annis in her first race for the club was 37th.
Brenda Hare lined up at the start for the first time in about seven seasons and with about 400m to go was just behind Vicky but a calf injury forced her to hobble to the finish finishing in 48th place.  Helen Bostock was in 53rd place and with 66 finishers in this race the ladies section continues to flourish.

In the U17 race which was held in conjunction with the senior men’s race Lewis Rodgers continued his good form finishing in fourth place.

The Senior Men’s team who won the championship last year were a little depleted at the front end of the field but they still managed to finish as 3rd team with 149 points.  This fixture was won by New Marske on 109 with Hartlepool Burn Road 2nd on 118.  Individual performances were John Hunter 5th overall and 1st V1, 18th Andrew Pearson, 22nd  Dan Middlemas, 27th Bill Bingham, 31st Rob Williamson, and 46th Paul Wildmore in his first cross country event.

The other non-scoring members were 48th Neil Duffield, 60th Chris Ellis, 63rd Alan Howard, 79th Dave Horness, 83rd Ian Rodgers, 92nd Jimmy O’Brian, 104th Mally Peggs, and 116th Tony Hare.

The full results are only available on hard copy at the moment so they will be posted on the notice board.

Next event :  NYSD Relays, which we are hosting, at Caedmon on Sunday the 29th October first race at 12 noon. Full details of the teams can be obtained from myself, Neil Duffield and Adele Thompson, but we will need as much help as possible on the Sunday morning setting out the course and with refreshments.  Donations will be gratefully accepted.
